Last Friday, we showed this unfinished painting of Robbi’s, which contains (or so I believe), four hungry birds contemplating supper.
And so we asked kids to draw us a picture of their favorite food. Or favorite foods. Or favorite feast. As you will see, some were all about the food itself while others chose to focus on the social aspects of the dining experience.
Let’s start with the hard-core foodie. Spencer, a man after my own heart, listed the following as his “favorite foods”:
Red bean bun, BBQ pork bun, pesto pasta, milk, mango, sushi, spring rolls, pancake, gold fish (crackers), fish, peanut butter and jelly sandwich, pizza, fruit.
BBQ pork bun! Indeed. Spencer and I could spend a long time together happily on a desert island as long as there were an endless supply of BBQ pork buns. If there were also sushi, pizza, and spring rolls, all the better.
Spencer’s brother Tyler, on the other hand, has a more focused appreciation. His favorite food is mango. Just mango. Mango, mango, mango.
I really admire Tyler’s drawing. Although mangoes are mostly yellow, they have little flecks of green and red on their skin. He’s got it just right. I guess when someone appreciates the mango as much as Tyler does, he has spent a good amount of time studying how they look (and taste).
His mom added, “[I have no idea why there are chickens in the picture].”
As for Joe, who often sends us drawings and stories, his “favorite dinner” is not defined by what he eats but by who he eats it with. And that person is his best friend Nick. They like to eat together while sitting by the window.
And what do the friends eat? Chocolate chip cookies, fresh cut tomatoes, and blackberries for dinner.
Apparently, chocolate chip cookies are Nick’s favorite (or often the only food he’ll eat.), while tomatoes and blackberries are Joe’s favorites.
Joe’s mom asked if the boys might still be hungry after such a dinner. To which Joe replied that he and Nick would rather go play.
As for Alden, her favorite meal is rainbow ice cream. In this drawing the ice cream is the red/pink column to the right of the blue figure in the lower left. The ice cream is “leaking” (later clarified as “melting”). And there are lots of friends gathered to eat it. In the top row is a series of suns, named “Ona, Cyn, Sara, Ora, Sorna, Porsta, Corst, Morla, Torla, Sina, Liza, and Lily.” As for the people on the bottom row, Alden told says, “That’s my brother Jathan, Baby August, Julia, and Kato. That’s Quinten.” As for the two four-legged friends, “That’s Lily and that’s a new cat I got named Orna.”
Apparently, the various friends are having a “joyful costume party,” but no one brought any costumes.
As for the ice cream, everybody gets some, but the the suns get “inches” of ice cream and the people get a “bite.” And the cats get “medium-sized” bites.
As for the bodies, they are full of bones (little circles). But the suns’ bodies are not. Apparently, she forgot the bones of the blue cat (Orna, I think), but will remedy the situation after breakfast.
I’d like to add some commentary, but I think there’s nothing else to say. I’ve been entirely vanquished by Alden’s imagination.
Perhaps inspired by his sister, Kato also drew ice cream. Chocolate ice cream, to be specific. The ice cream is also melting, because the sun us out (the yellow behind the brown). But Kato wanted to make sure we understood that the ice cream was “stronger than the sun.”
Not a bad quality for ice cream to have, I say.
As for Robbi, she finally finished her painting yesterday afternoon.
We never did figure out what those little birds are going to have for supper. Perhaps it’s a worm and perhaps it’s a mango. Perhaps it’s more fun not to know for sure.
If you think you’d like to hang it on your wall, bidding us under way HERE. The auction ends next Monday afternoon at 12:30 eastern time.
For now, I think I’ll go have something to eat.
