Here in the barn, we play a game called Treasure Hunt. Here’s how it works.
First off, we play it in the living room. If you want to play this game in your house, pick a room with lots of stuff in it.
Second, we drew a map of the room, making sure to include all of the stuff. To be fair, Robbi is the one who did the drawing. If I had done the drawing, it wouldn’t have looked this nice.
Next, either Robbi or I hides a piece of treasure somewhere in the room. For example, just now I hid this purple ring in the base of the lamp between the chair and the window.
Next, I use a red X to mark the spot on the treasure map where the treasure is hidden. Then, I show the map to Alden (who has been standing in the corner with her hands over her eyes all the while).
Then, armed with insider information about the location of the treasure, Alden sets out to hunt.
I’m not sure where she picked it up, but she actually sniffs out the treasure. Using her nose. As if she were a bloodhound, perhaps. In any case, the combination of scent and treasure map generally lead her straight to the prize.
Even if you know what it’s going to be in advance, treasure is treasure, and finding it is always fun.
But not nearly as fun as finding it again. And again. The great thing about Treasure Hunt is that you can play it for a long time. Providing there’s enough stuff in the room that you pick. And provided you don’t run out of red crayon.
