For a while now, we’ve been posting a drawing prompt every Friday and asking kids to draw us pictures. But Bobbledy Books is about drawing pictures and writing stories, so today, we’re posting the very first writing prompt.

Here’s how it works. Robbi drew a picture for you (actually, it’s a painting). Here it is.

Your job is to look at the picture and tell us what you see.

We want to know two things:

1) what you think the picture should be called

2) the story of what’s happening in the picture

Keep in mind that a story doesn’t have to be long and complicated.

For example, a very short story might be: “The man walked up the mountain and down the other side.”

I showed the painting above to Kato and Alden, and this is what they had to say.

Kato named the picture “Playing,” and here’s his story:

“That robot wants to pick up that kitty.”

Alden named the picture “Robot and Kitty,” and here’s her story:

“That cat wants to go in the door to get her temperature taken. Because she needs to be extra strong and extra good when she goes to the doctor.”

Even though Kato’s and Alden’s stories aren’t very long, they’re still stories. They tell us something that we didn’t already know from just looking at the picture.

This week, we want you to tell us your story. Look at the picture and tell us what you think it should be called and then tell us what’s happening. Write it in an email (or have a grownup help) and send it to me so that I can post it on the blog next Wednesday.

From now on, we’ll alternate between writing prompts one week and drawing prompts the next week.

Also, from now on, we’re going to auction off the images we use for the writing prompts. Next Wednesday when we post the stories, we’re also going to post Robbi’s original painting as an Ebay auction.

And that’s quite enough talking from me. Go write a story!
