We sent out the kid-drawn, kid-illustrated Gorillas in the Kitchen last Friday.

We’ll tell you who the winner is as soon as we hear from the mom of the winner that the winner’s copy of Gorillas has arrived. For now, let me tell you about a day not long ago when I was hanging out with August and Kato while Alden was at school.

For the first time that I can remember, they were really playing together. August was handing blocks to Kato, and Kato was stacking them into a tower. Kato was pleased with his diminutive apprentice. “My baby is helping me!” he reported.

The tower was tall. It was a source of tremendous pride and excitement. The thrills of collaboration were in full swing.

But the perils of guileless trust were very real indeed. Surveying the rubble of his former glory, Kato felt something more than mere disappointment that an edifice had crumbled.

He felt the genuine sting of betrayal. His loyal minion had turned insidious saboteur.

The brothers have since recovered from this dark passage. There is something like accord between them. I predict that they will come together again someday (perhaps someday soon) to build something great.

But for now, it’s baby steps. Baby steps, I say.
