Last week, to get your creative juices flowing, we showed you Robbi’s drawing of a surprised dog. Here it is to jog your memory.
Then we asked you to draw your own picture of someone or some thing that is surprised, hoping that you’d also include in your picture the someone or some thing that was doing the surprising.
Of course, we got some great submissions. We’ll start with a couple of submissions from the brothers Spencer and Tyler, who are so committed to the Bobbledy prompts that they took time out of their fall break trip to New York to do these drawings (and write some accompanying stories).
Spencer
It is Halloween and the doggie is scared of the rocket because of the loud rocket blast. There’s someone in a zombie costume scaring it, too. There’s a street lamp because it’s dark out. There’s a pumpkin on the road because it’s Halloween. The grass is orange and yellow because it’s fall.
Glancing at this picture, I was presented with a host of baffling questions. For example: “What’s up with that street lamp?” “Why in the heck is that grass orange and yellow?” and “Why in the world is that doggie so scared?” Now I know that he has ample cause for alarm. Here’s hoping he gets some nice treats to go with all these tricks.
Tyler
Hallow-buddle-bean
It’s Halloween and a dragon scared the pepperoni pizza, and the pizza got surprised and there’s a zombie behind the pizza, and the dragon’s behind the tree and the tree’s a tree house and also it is The End.
Halloween is certainly a time to expect the unexpected. I’ve always wondered what it would take to strike fear in the heart of a pepperoni pizza, and now I know. Good thing dragons are imaginary. What I can’t tell from the story is whether the pizza is aware of the zombie or if he has yet another fright coming his way. What I also can’t tell is why this tree and zombie have it in for this poor tree. I mean, what did he do to deserve such a fate? I guess we’ll never know. And that’s why I think of Tyler as the master of suspense.
Alden (and August)
First off, Alden would like to make it clear that she did not draw the wavy, jagged lines that dominate the page. She is responsible only for the compelling (dare I say “gripping”?) scene between Lily (our deceased cat) and the bear (who is, apparently armless, legless, and lacking the expected bear-style ears). What I cannot know is August’s motivation for adding to the image. Are these lines dramatic expressions of Lily’s fear? Or was he trying to negate her surrealist impulse (August is a meat and potatoes kind of art critic, preferring the likes of Van Eyck and Vermeer). Or perhaps he’s just an almost two-year-old brother trying to get in on the action?
Kato
Here is Kato’s drawing.
If you can’t tell, it is an airplane. After praising Kato for his efforts, I asked him whether the plane was surprised, and if so, who was doing the surprising. This caused Kato a moment of reflection.
After which, he handed me the drawing, saying “This is for August…because it’s not very good.”
I’ve seldom encountered a more confounding blend of generosity and insult. August, who was at that moment banging on a wooden ball with a wooden hammer, seemed not at all injured by the implication.
And finally, we have a drawing from Lena. As far as I know, it is the first Bobbledy drawing prompt submission to be drawn on an iPad.
I am curious to know whether Lena’s cat actually uses the sink in this way. And if Lena’s cat is actually this electric pinkish purplish hue. And whether, when she is surprised, Lena’s hair actually lifts a few inches off of her head. If any of these things were true, I would have to be surprised myself.
Last week, we told you that Robbi would finish her drawing of the puppy by adding the thing that caused him to look so surprised. Well, here it is. I wonder if Lena would be just as shocked as the puppy at what is happening in this painting.
If you are the sort who likes shocking images, Robbi’s offended puppy is now on the auction block over at eBay. Bidding ends at 12:30 Sunday afternoon.
But I wouldn’t be at all surprised if no one wants it.
