Summer is a time for fun. No school. Nice weather. Vacations with the family. We asked kids to draw pictures of their favorite memory of this past summer. Here’s what they sent us.
From Garcia in Massachusetts:
Here’s what Garcia’s mom had to say:
Garcia’s favorite part of summer was having his first sleepover with his gal pal, Alden. Garcia made a drawing of his room and then asked mommy to put real faces on top of his drawn faces.
But the summer fun for Garcia’s family was not limited to sleepovers with Alden. Indeed, Garcia’s brother Diego took fun to a whole new level.
Said Gina:
Diego’s favorite memory of this past summer was attending the “Eve of Destruction” at the New Lebanon, NY Speedway with his father. The picture is of Rocky Hardcore jumping a pile of seven burning cars in a tricked out RV.
Oh my.
And now for our most loyal drawing prompt contributors: Spencer and Tyler from California.
Here are thoughts from their mom, Eunice:
Spencer’s favorite summer memory (predictably) was “hanging out with my cousins, Melody, Valerie, and Paxon and my brother Tyler drawing and making books.” His drawing is of him, his brother, and cousins proudly standing next to the “Cousin’s Library” on display next to our fireplace.
Apparently, Spencer and Tyler make books even more often than Robbi and I do and have a “library” of books, which can be checked out with a library card! Clearly, these guys are our competition.
As for Tyler, Eunice continued:
Tyler has two favorite memories: “riding the roller coaster at Gilroy
Gardens with my mom…”
“…and going mountain biking with Da Da.”
Lena from Massachusetts sent this drawing, and her mom Kay sent this note:
Lena’s response to your drawing prompt was a little racy, so I’ve attached
two versions: one is the rated G version and the other is uncensored.
For those of you who who don’t want to risk offense, here is the censored version.
And for those of you who like to live on the wild side, here is the big reveal:
And here is a drawing from the barn. Alden’s favorite part of summer was going to Betterton Beach. Along the bottom of the painting are rows of shells underwater, which Alden is “looking at with binoculars.” The hand is Alden’s hand reaching underwater to pick them up. At first, she tried to paint her hand, and got as far as the thumb (see upper left) before deciding it was too hard to paint the rest. Robbi suggested that Alden paint her actual hand and then do a transfer onto the paper.
Alden painted her hand very carefully.
The verdict: It’s fun to be a human stamp pad.
And here is a drawing of Robbi “bouncing on the bungee trampoline at the Kent County Fair as the clouds gathered and it started to rain.”
In case you’re wondering why Robbi is upside down, the bungee bouncer helps you jump high.
Really, high.
At one point, Robbi bounced so high that she flipped upside down, but at that moment, I was too busy worrying about her to take a picture. As it turned out, she was just fine.
And finally, we have this wonderful drawing from Holly.
Holly is not actually a kid, but she draws every day and channels her wry observations on life and everything into her wonderful web comic (that you should check out, of course).
Which is to say, thank you, everyone, who send us drawings. This might be my favorite batch yet. We’re busy thinking up a new prompt for Friday. If you have any ideas for things you’d like to draw, send us an email and let us know.
