Last week, we asked kids to draw Elves. As usual, they came up with some great stuff. Without further ado:

Here is Spencer’s elf (and some words by way of explanation):

My elf is called Spencer Elf. It is making a sword and a toy gun that can shoot out balls that stick to glass. He’s making the toy for me of course since I never get to play with stuff like that. The elf has many other toys and wrapping paper around him.

I wonder if Spencer’s drawing is a parable of wish fulfillment. I wonder if Santa heeded this late revision to the Christmas list.

And here, from Tyler:

My drawing is of Tyler Elf. He’s giving presents to Spencer – it’s something I don’t know. A secret present. The other people in the picture are going to bed. They’re cold so they have fires in their houses with lots of smoke coming out of the chimneys.

I like that Tyler drew a picture of something so secret that even he doesn’t know what it is.

Alden thought carefully before starting her drawing.

She drew our family, as elves, inside an igloo. Alden, who never likes to be pressed on the particulars, declined to explain the rationale behind her thinking. She did, however, identify the lineup. The elves below are, from left to right, August, Papa, Alden, Mama, and Kato.

I’m not sure why Kato is such a stylistic outlier. Neither was Alden.

I did not think carefully before starting my drawing. Like most of my drawings, my drawing of an Elf sprang from a strange and intuitive place within me. I did not think. I simply drew. And when I was done (it took about 47 seconds), I looked down to see what I’d come up with.

As far as I can tell, this is an elf named Dan, who was asked to step in for Santa when Santa broke a bone in his foot. Here is Dan standing on the roof of his very first house of the night (with about 3 billion houses still to go, mind you) wondering what to do about the fact that there seems to be a fire in the chimney. Poor Dan. Poor kids all over the world. I swear I didn’t mean to make such a sad drawing.

As for Robbi, here’s what she had to say about her drawing:

My elf’s name is Mojojojo. He works in the candy workshop, adding the fiery spice part to candy canes. The candy canes come straight from the great outdoors at the North Pole, where they get their icy coolness. They need to be taken out of the ice blocks and carefully roasted over a fire to get the perfect blend of hot and cool. Lesser elves who aren’t as careful over the fire get sent over to the Atomic Fireball workshop. Atomic Fireballs are really just the boiled hot dog of the candy world.

Merry Christmas, everyone. We hope you’re having a wonderful day. In case you’re wondering, here’s our Christmas tree.
