Last week’s drawing prompt asked kids to draw what they thought was happening below the waves.
According to Spencer, “Under the water, I see a submarine, a secret pathway to another planet, fish, seaweed, treasure, rocks, and sand. Daddy is swimming on his back doing the back stroke close to the pirate ship. I’m at the bottom thinking, ‘What’s this door doing here in the ocean??!'”
And from his brother Tyler: “The fish are wondering what the orange doors are. There are two ladybug submarines with people inside. One is headed to the left door, and one is headed to the right doors. They have never been there before. There is treasure at the bottom of the sea, and plants. Above is a hurricane in the sky – but I didn’t draw it.”
Wesley shared his drawing, with the following thoughts: “The green goes on the bottom; it is seaweed.
In addition to seaweed, there are a few fish and a lot of sea monsters! The green sea monster is king!”
Even though she had already done an underwater drawing, Robbi decided to do another. Apparently, she has lots of thoughts about what’s going on down there.
I love that school of fish. When I was a kid, we had an aquarium, and in the aquarium, we had a tiny fish called a tetra. Robbi’s fish kind of look like tetras, who used to swim around together, silver and shiny with a hint of the rainbow in their scales.
Here is Alden’s painting of our family’s underwater adventures in our “underwater boat”. We are, from left to right, Alden, me (with August in my lap, Robbi, and Kato (who is driving). The sequins represent “the love light shining in our hearts.” Ah, Montessori school.
And here is Kato’s fish, who is not, as one might assume, smoking a cigarette. He is, in fact, blowing bubbles out of his mouth.
Thanks to all you kids for giving us a glimpse beneath the sea. I have always wondered what was happening down there.
And now I know.
