It’s groundhog day! The day every year when our little, furry friend climbs out of his burrow after a long winter of hibernation, and looks for his shadow. If he sees it, that means six more weeks of winter – if not, spring is on its way!
It turns out you actually have a lot of different options for Groundhog Day – there’s the most famous, Punxsutawney Phil, from Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.
You can apparently watch the live stream HERE, if you’re up early enough. But keep in mind that Phil doesn’t have a great record – according to the StormFax Weather Almanac and historical records, he’s only been right 39% of the time.
So, if you want to hedge you bets, you can also check in with Wiarton Willie, the albino groundhog from Wiarton in Ontario, Canada.
(that’s not really him, but it is a gigantic statue of him that I will have to go visit someday).
There’s also Staten Island Chuck, of the Staten Island Zoo. The Mayor of New York is there to see if he sees his shadow. Hopefully newly elected Mayor de Blasio will have better luck than Mayor Bloomberg did in 2009, when Chuck gave him a little nibble on the glove:
Or Buckeye Chuck, of Marion, Ohio; Balzac Billy of Alberta, Canada; General Beauregard Lee of Atlanta, Georgia; Birmingham Bill of Birmingham, Alabama; Sir Walter Wally of Raleigh, North Carolina.

Looks like 6 more weeks of winter, everyone! Though I’m not surprised. I’m going to take advantage of the nice weather today, at least. Here’s Phil doing his hard weatherman work this morning: http://www.visitpa.com/groundhog-day-live-stream
