As I write this post, we are on a plane from Minneapolis to Seattle. From there, we will catch a flight to Anchorage. After a 12-hour layover during which we will set up camp on the floor of the baggage claim, we will board a much smaller plane for King Salmon, the last bastion of relative civilization we will encounter for the next three weeks. From there, we will board a tiny plane with a lone propeller, and fly for 30 minutes across the tundra, gazing down at the many lakes and winding streams, waving at the occasional caribou.
In spite of all this excitement, the thing that pleases me most at this moment is the birthday card that just showed up in my inbox.
Apparently, Lilah just had a birthday, and apparently, she took the time to finish the incomplete picture in her Bobbledy birthday card.
Lilah’s cat is scared, all right. But of what? Have a look.
Is the cat scared of color? Perhaps it has been living in a black and white world all its life and suddenly, all sorts of colors have crept in through that tiny hole in the wall. As wonderful as color is, can you imagine how surprising it would be if you were seeing it for the very first time?
Or perhaps those colors are ghosts. Scary ones, of course. Or maybe they are very tall mice? Or very small elephants? I do not know. But it doesn’t really matter. All that matters is that this is a wonderful drawing and that Lilah had a birthday.
Please join me in wishing her a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
