As you may or may not know, not all Bobbledy club members are kids. There are a few adults out there secure enough in their adulthood (yet sufficiently tethered to their inner kid) to find a home for Bobbledy in spite of their present kidlessness. Dora is one of our more mature club members, buy like every other, she got a card from us on her birthday. And like so many before her, she took the time to draw us a picture and send it our way.
I love Dora’s drawing. I love it for so many reasons. First of all, she builds on the archetypal tension between cat and mouse in a playful and satisfying way, painting in one panel a stirring drama of sudden inversion of the established order. Secondly, she takes the time to point out that the candle light is candle light, a seemingly irrelevant and unnecessary detail that nonetheless adds richness (and a welcome absurdity) to the scene. Thirdly, she makes not one, but two aural puns with the word “meow.” Normally, this would make me wince and want to throw something at someone, but somehow, Dora pulls it off with confident mastery.
Thank you, Dora, for gracing us with your prodigious drawing talent and marvelous imagination. We wish that you had birthdays once a week (though perhaps you wish you only had them once every four or five years?).
Please everyone join me in saying HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DORA. Thanks for sharing your special day with us.
