As August gets older, his personality is starting to emerge. He’s a shockingly cheerful baby, especially considering all he has to put up with here in the barn (two older siblings, two ancient cats, and a lovable but clumsy blue dog). He has started to blaze around the place on all fours with the force and determination of a Sherman tank. No ball of lint or forgotten toy is safe from his well-established grazing instinct. He smiles constantly and laughs often. He observes and he seems largely to approve. I envy his outlook and wonder if it can possibly remain so rosy.

Yesterday, he discovered the piano, and though it seems impossible, his sunny disposition grew two shades brighter.

What will come of him? What will come of any of these babies of mine? Sometimes I feel like I have a say, and other times I feel as if I’m merely watching the pageant unfold, hoping for the best and doing my best to enjoy every last moment.
