Last week we asked kids to draw pictures of silly animals, whether animals that lived inside their houses or animals that lived inside their imaginations.
Alden’s and Kato’s cousin Orin is in town for the week, and so last night, we had a drawing party.
Perhaps it was more of a “drawing session,” than a party. Everyone took the drawing very seriously.
Alden drew a “lion sticking his head out.”
Apparently, he is sticking his tongue out, too.
Ori worked in silence, with intense concentration.
But when he was done, he explained that this is “a spider and a lion, and the lion is trying to get the ball in his goal and the spider is trying to get the ball in his goal.”
A spider playing soccer? That is silly.
Kato explained his drawing as follows: “This is me and this is Alden and this is Papa. Momma’s not here because she’s sick. And we’re three silly monkeys going like this.”
“Like what?” I said.
“Like this,” he said.
Pure silliness.
As for August…
I argue that, with hair like his, he qualifies as a silly animal and does not need to draw a picture of one.
Moving away from our drawing party now, here is a drawing from Joe, who has, apparently, always wanted a monkey.
According to Joe, this is a “silly monkey upside down… swinging from a tree.”
Though Joe’s monkey is indeed silly (and suffering from a case of static electricity?), the rather placid look on his face suggests that his tree-swinging is good for the soul. Perhaps we should all try a little tree-swinging. Then we could all look like silly monkeys – while feeling like a million bucks. I think Joe’s monkey has things pretty well figured out.
Here’s the illustration that inspired it all, a drawing of our dog Iggy lying on her back, as she often does when she wants someone to pat her belly. Since last week, Robbi has taken out her paints so that you might see Iggy’s ridiculousness in full color.
If you’re interested in having this drawing for your very own, it has just been posted on Ebay, where it will be on auction until Sunday at 12:30EST. BID NOW!
Finally, here is my silly animal. In case you can’t tell, it is drawing of a giraffe, though Robbi contends that it looks more like a long-necked dalmatian.
I pointed out that dalmatians don’t have little knobs on their heads, to which Robbi pointed out that maybe long-necked dalmatians do.
To which I responded that my long-necked dalmatian/giraffe thing was the perfect drawing for a prompt about silly animals, to which Robbi responded that for once in my life, I was right.
