Last week, in the prelude to this week of thanks, we asked kids to say please. Or, more specifically, to draw pictures of someone or some thing that was saying please. Now that I think of it, this was a rather abstract and tricky prompt, so I am glad that a few kids out there were up to the challenge.

One of them was Joe

Here is his drawing.

Joe-Please

And here is what he had to say about it:

This is a picture of me saying: “Please~”
On my birthday, I got presents from my friends and families.  🙂
I really wanted to open them right away!
But mama said not all at once.
Why not?!!  I wanted to see what’s inside…
Please…
Please, please, please, please… Can I open them?
Can I open my presents now?

Joe, I know only too well the exquisite torture of waiting to open your presents. On one hand, you want to be polite and not dive head-first into the presents while others are hugging and chatting and eating cake, etc. On the other hand, every molecule in your body wants nothing more than to engage in a frenzied present-opening carnival.

But I’m sure you’ve discovered, as I have, over and over and over again, that the contents of those boxes are never quite as exciting as the thought of what might be in them, before the opening begins.

And here is his heartfelt plea:

I am a bonobo. I am endangered. My mom was shot and killed. Park Rangers found me. They took me to a wildlife center.

They raised me there.  They bottle fed me. They taught me how to eat using sticks. They showed me the forest and taught me about predators.  In time I was old enough to be released. Finally, I was released in the middle of a Wildlife Park.

I live in the Congo. Loggers are destroying our forests. People are shooting us because we take their food.  The reason we take their food is people take away our land. There is a war in the Congo. So people are shooting all over the place. Even dropping bombs. We need help.

Please stop the logging of our forests. Please please please. Please donate money to Wildlife services and organizations who are trying to save us and many other animals in the Congo.  Please.

Thank you, Ian, for sharing this story with us. Most of the time on the Bobbledy Blog, we act silly and have fun, but it’s nice to be reminded every once in a while that there are a lot of problems in the world. It’s so good to know that there are kids who are aware of the problems and care enough to do something about them. We’re so glad that you’re part of Bobbledy.

As for Tyler

And here’s what he has to say about his drawing:

Inside the Poke-ball river, a shark in the water is going to eat the Poke-balls. The Poke-beggars are begging to watch a movie. The shark finds out that his sister is watching the movie, too, so he goes away.

And suddenly, we’ve shifted from tragedy to sheer bafflement. At least for this almost-39-year-old. I am not familiar with the characteristics of the Poke-Ball river, but it seems like a puzzling place. What is going on here? Why does the shark decide NOT to eat the Poke-beggars upon learning that his sister is watching a film? Does he fear his sister? Or does he crave nothing but her happiness, and, assuming that the movie is making her happy, figures that his work is done? Tyler’s story reminds me of one by a man named Kafka. Only, I was generally less confused by his.

Spencer:

All the children are saying, “Please, please, please – I want the sword because it’s so cool.” But the mother says they can’t have it because the sword was given to her by her father. Beneath the sword are a bunch of powers.

You know what they say about a good sword. It’s always sitting on a bunch of powers. Why else did King Arthur put so much energy in to pulling Excalibur out of the stone? Why else does every samurai have one? Because swords are awesome, of course.

Admit it, you are pleading for a sword now, too.

And, finally, Robbi

Her pleading frog was the thing that got us thinking about saying please in the first place.

Last week he was entirely naked. I think he looks much better with color added, don’t you?

If you are so inspired, you can head on over to Ebay and say “please.” But you are likely to have more luck if you let your credit card do the talking.
