Have you ever heard the word “mandible”?
It’s a weird word. I mean, when you start to listen to how it sounds, it sounds like a very weird word. Say it a few times in a row and you’ll see what I mean. MAN-DIBBLE. MAN-DIBBLE. MAN-DIBBLE.
If I didn’t have a dictionary and had to guess what mandible means, I would guess that is a man who has really skinny legs and really skinny hands and walks around taking his hat off saying, “How do you do?” to everyone.
I think I think that because the “MAN” part of “MANDIBLE” is the man, and the “DIBLE” part of “MANDIBLE” is something small, a little wobbly, and trifling. Because it’s “MAN” and not “GUY-” or “HUMAN-” or “DUDE-” -dible, he seems kind of the polite sort who would wear a hat.
So here’s your drawing prompt for this week: What do you think a “mandible” might be? If you already know what it is, are there any other words you know that sound funny, or sound like they might mean something else? Draw a picture of a “mandible” or another funny word (even a made up word!).
When you’re done with your drawing, scan it or take a picture of it and send it to Matthew so he can post it next Tuesday.
