After a week devoted to writing, this week we return to the drawing prompt, and since Robbi is busy illustrating a book, I’m afraid you’re stuck with me and my limited drawing skills.
But first, the prompt.
I was thinking this morning about all the things I’ve lost over the years. And also of all the things I’ve found. I’ve lost baseball hats and pairs of sunglasses and even my favorite jacket. I’ve found pennies and golf balls and even a fresh orange that washed up on the beach in Alaska. But I wondered what is the thing I was most sorry to lose and the thing I was most happy to find? I thought and thought about it, and here’s what I came up with:
When I was little, I lost my two front teeth. In fact, they were rotten, so the dentist had to take them out. For a long, long time, I had a big hole in the middle of my mouth.
A few years ago, my friend Matt took me to the beach on the Western Shore of the Chesapeake Bay to look for fossils along the clay cliffs that constantly erode, revealing new fossils as they do. We spent all morning looking in the shallow tidepools near the water. I found three fossilized shark’s teeth from millions of years ago. I like to imagine that these teeth I now hold in my hand were once in the mouth of a fearsome, prehistoric shark. I wonder if his mouth looked as silly when his teeth feel out as I did when I lost mine.
For this week, tell us: What is the thing that you were most sorry to lose and what is thing that you were most most happy to find?
Send us your pictures in an email by the end of the day next Tuesday, and we’ll put them up on this blog next Wednesday. Yes, this is a slight change from how we’ve been doing it so far. We figure you guys can use the extra day to draw!
