Hello folks! It’s Tuesday, and we’re back to the drawing board, as they say!
Well, I was inspired by the fact that groundhogs are called “whistle pigs” in some places because of their chirrupy little whistle. If you haven’t heard it yet, you can go to our Theme of the Week page HERE and have a listen. So I thought I’d draw a whistling groundhog. Also, I like how all of the Punxsutawney groundhogerati dress up in tophats and suits to present Phil to his shadow (see here).
And so, I present you Whistling Phil:
And, because after I painted him, it looked like the shadow under his chin was a beard, I decided to name him Whistling Phil Lincoln.
If you’d like, I’ve made a copy that you can download HERE and color in. He looks quite naked, so you can add some fur. And maybe you could add a picture of whatever he’s whistling a tune about (birthdays? rainbows? twinkle twinkle little stars?).
Alright! And now it’s time to get out your pens and pencils and see how groundhogs inspire you! Have your parents post your pictures in the comments below, or add them to our instagram feed #bobbledygroundhog.
The best submission of the week wins an archival print of my version of Whistling Phil, along with being named Champion of the Week (a downloadable trophy with your name on it!).
Or, if you just want to shell out cash for Whistling Phil, he’s for sale over HERE on ebay until Sunday.

Iris sent us this most excellent worksheet that she did in school about Groundhog Day. It was an exercise in writing AND drawing shadows. I am especially fond of the depiction of the groundhog’s pink shadow. Nice, Iris!
