I had an assignment this past summer to illustrate an article about how cities can become characters in books. It was an interesting article, and an interesting idea. Even though cities aren’t people, they can definitely seem to have personalities – they can be gloomy (London, in Oliver Twist), they can be bright and busy (Busytown!), they can be tough (Detroit), they can be romantic (Paris, Paris, Paris! Where else?), they can be stern (Pyongyang), they can be whimsical (Barcelona).

The article mentioned a number of different cities, and my job was to sort of smash them all together and make one city out of a bunch of different cities mentioned in the article:

Cityscape Mashup

You can find a list of the cities and links to them HERE, if you’re interested in seeing which buildings are from what cities. My city turned out to be busy and a little bit tough – lots of smoke coming out of factories, and lots of cars – but not too many people. Everyone is inside being busy and not looking out the windows. The sky is flat and the smoke makes the air a little hard to breathe.

So here’s your drawing prompt: Take some of your favorite buildings from where you live, some buildings from places you’ve visited or places you’ve seen or places you’ve imagined, and put them all together in one big city. And maybe your city has a personality – is it happy? Is it sad? Is it fun? Is it goofy?

Please send your responses to Matthew by next Tuesday, April 3, so that I can post them for everyone to enjoy.
