Have you ever stood at the foot of a skyscraper and looked up? Have you ever been on a boat in the middle of the ocean? Have you ever climbed a tree all the way to its top and looked out over everything? If you have done one of those things, you may have felt small. When you are right next to something so much bigger than your own body, it’s easy to feel small. It can even be frightening and amazing.
Have you ever looked at a tiny leaf and noticed an even tinier bug on the leaf? Have you ever found a small rock on the ground that was so pretty you had to keep it? Have you ever held a snail and let it crawl around on your hand? If you have done one of those things, then you may have felt big. When you find something smaller than any small thing you’ve seen before, it can make you feel big, like a powerful giant.
Here’s my drawing of a big fish and a small fish together.
The big fish is so big that he doesn’t even fit onto the page! Do you think he’s going to eat that little fish? I think he’s just amazed at the tiny size of the pink fish. The big fish has probably never seen another fish so small.
Here’s the prompt for this week: Draw something big and something small together. Maybe it’s you with something very small that you found outside. Or maybe it’s the most gigantic sea-monster that ever lived eating a miniature candy cane. It’s okay to use a few extra sheets of paper to fit the big thing, and it’s okay to use a magnifying glass when you draw the small thing. We can’t wait to see what you draw!
When you’re done with your drawing, scan it or take a picture of it and send it to Matthew so he can post it next Tuesday for everyone to see.
