Alright everyone! It’s time to pick up your crayons/markers/pens/whittling tools and come up with some volcano art! I thought Matthew’s joke about dormant volcanoes being cool was pretty funny, so I drew Hal snarkily saying how cool he was to his neighboring dormant volcano, while Eddie goes all eruptive in front of them.
Please post your pictures in the comments below so everyone can see them! And remember:
1. Best comment of the week wins a trophy! (A fake, drawn one, but still an awesome trophy!)
2. You can post your drawing here any time during the week – not just on Tuesday.
3. Volcanoes are cool! I mean, not cool at all!!
Go to it!!!

Here is Anna’s drawing of a volcano. Also in the drawing are a tiger, kitten, lion, and bear. They are probably going to visit the dinosaur dentist who lives in the volcano, because their teeth hurt.
This is a FANTASTIC drawing of a volcano! I love how threatening the lava looks as it shoots (carefully) out of the top of the volcano, but then how it becomes tame and almost comforting as it flows down the mountainside. I hope the dinosaur dentist isn’t sidetracked by the eruption and is able to take care of all those hurting teeth.
Here is the attached story in case you are having trouble reading it–it’s almost an autobiography in disguise.
Once there were two kinds of volcanoes. One was Chinese and one was American. They all shot out candy. In each volcano family, there were 5 volcanoes. There were a mommy, a daddy, and three brothers. The daddy and mommy shot out all the candy in the world. The biggest kid volcano shot out lollipops. The next one shot cake pops, and the baby volcano shot sweet ice, and together they can make anything.
Harvey – this might be the best partnership between the Chinese and the Americans that ever existed! Candy spouting volcanos! What a great family! Hopefully, if I ever meet them, they are still erupting and not dormant, so I’ll get to get my hands on some of those cake pops. Yummmmmm!
MJ wanted to draw Olympus Mons, the largest volcano in the solar system! It is HUGE! She also wanted there to be magma AND lava in her picture. And a little green martian too, since Olympus Mons is on Mars. Actually, if Olympus Mons is the biggest volcano in the solar system, then that martian must also be HUUUUUGE!!
GIANT MARTIAN!!!
Alden and MJ worked together, so you can see some of the influence. Alden’s volcano is back on good old Earth, though. You can see the lava that has cooled and turned back into rock at the base of the volcano.
That eruption is no joke. Look out, little people down below!
Here is Sydney’s red and blue volcano. 🙂
Sydney! Did you see the link I posted earlier about the blue lava??
Pretty cool! There’s a movie being made about it, but it’s in French. If you skip to about 1 minute in on the trailer, though, you can see some really great video of the blue lava: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzi67qOtvsg#t=115
Have a look!
Not a contest entry – but a photo! Thalia spent her week in preschool studying dinosaurs and making a volcano with her teachers and friends. This photo was taken right after some serious volcano painting, on Thursday. Today, out of nowhere, holy smoke! The volcano erupted! Thalia said she did not know what “recipe the teachers used” but she noticed a “smell that was so disgusting” and she thinks that “a real live volcano might also smell yuck if it erupts four times like ours did.” Hard to say.
This is awesome, Thalia! That volcano really looks like a volcano (and NOT an upside-down flower pot!). Nice work! It’s funny you say that your volcano smelled yuck, because the closest I’ve ever come to a volcano was a place that totally smelled yuck. When I was about your age (I might have been in kindergarten, actually) I went to Japan with my mother. We went to visit a place there called Owakudani, which is famous for having lots of hot springs. Those hot springs are hot because they’re near an active volcano. There’s a gondola ride there (kind of like a closed in ski lift) you can take across the valley. All I remember is that something broke down on our trip, and our gondola was stopped right over a big bubbling pit of stinky sulfur springs. It smelled SOOOO yuck. Wowza. I actually don’t remember anything else about the trip, but lucky for me, someone ELSE did a blog post about HER trip there, so you can read all about it HERE: http://blog.jtbusa.com/all/black-eggs-and-bubbling-baths-at-owakudani-an-active-volcanic-valley-in-hakone – maybe you should try to get your teachers to boil eggs in the volcano you made and see how they taste.
Phoebe’s volcano. “It has a cloud of smoke but the lava is just about to happen, maybe in one more minute.”
Phoebe – the suspense is killing me!!!!!! I’m on what they call TENTERHOOKS! (ask your mom, the writer)
