One of the fun things about writing and illustrating books is that people sometimes ask you to sign them. This makes us feel very good about ourselves and just a little bit famous (but just a little bit, because we recognize that we are just regular people, after all).

Usually, people ask Robbi and me to sign their books, because we are the ones who have written and illustrated them – but the other night, someone decided that they wanted the entire family to sign their copy of Ten Thousand Stories.

Alden was only too happy to oblige.

She didn’t say it, exactly, but it was clear she thought that the request was long overdue. She has gotten much better at signing her name lately, thanks to the hard work of the good folks at Friendship Montessori School. (Thanks, Holli, Kelly, Amy, and Leah!)

Kato was next. At first, he was reluctant to sign, arguing that he should receive some sort of compensation for his efforts. A lollipop was promised. A deal was brokered. A Hancock was offered.

Kato is making good headway on the name-signing front, too.

When his turn arrived, August lunged for the pen with enthusiasm. A few wild scribbling stabs later, and he had made his mark.

And there you have it. The first (and possibly) only copy of this book with all five of our signatures. Thanks, Lizzie, for including the kids in the fun. Here’s hoping it’s worth something some day.
